ÖKON is engaged in issues of nature conservation and environmental research. The emphases of our work lie in acquiring biological and landscape ecological data, analysing them (also with multivariate statistics), developing conceptional goals and planning their realization. Our team consists of landscape ecologists, limnologists, zoologists and botanists and is supplemented by consulting agricultural and forest engineers, geographers or other professions. This allows us to independently accomplish difficult assignments. One of our main priorities is the biological-ecological analysis and evaluation of streams, rivers, their floodplains and the life communities living in them. A further priority is the survey of molluscs (snails and muscles), their determination, and application as bioindicators both for short term ecological characterization of biotopes as for long term surveillance of changing site factors, e. g. increasing soil-moisture or -dryness as a consequence of natural or anthropogenic changes.
